Choosing the Right Stones for Micromacramé Jewelry
Why Cabochons Make Wrapping Easier, Look Better, and Help Your Craft Thrive
Material Magic: What Stones Should I Use for Micromacramé Jewelry?
When it comes to micromacramé jewelry, the material you start with truly shapes the entire experience—and the outcome. After years of trial and evolution in my own craft, I’ve come to know the difference the right stones can make.
What Should I Wrap?
The best stones for micromacramé wraps are those with:
A smooth, flat front for showcasing,
A slight edge or corner on the back to help the cord grip securely.
Cabochons are ideal for this. They’re specifically cut and polished for jewelry-making, with shapes that fit snugly into flat wraps. In fact, 95% of my creations are made with cabochons, and I offer a curated selection in my online shop if you’re looking to start your own creations.
That said, you can experiment with other types:
Palm stones work if they’re not too thick or overly rounded.
Freeform flat stones are usable, but uneven thickness or deep curves make wrapping more difficult.
My Journey with Materials
When I first began back in 2013, I started with raw crystals in simple basket wraps—sometimes single, sometimes double or triple layered—accented with beads and finished with adjustable slip-knot straps. I used waxed linen from Marcoola Beads on the Sunshine Coast, experimenting with shapes and techniques without a clear path (or budget).
Learning the flat wrap technique was a turning point—but also a real challenge. I practiced with cheaper thumb stones and large, rounded palm stones, thinking it was smart to save money. But these shapes made things harder, and I often felt like I was failing. The real shift happened when I finally tried quality cabochons—and suddenly, the technique clicked. Not only did wrapping become smoother, but the results looked polished and more valuable.
And guess what? Customers noticed. The cab-wrapped pieces attracted more attention and people were happy to pay more for something that looked and felt refined.
Investing in Your Craft
Starting with quality materials may feel more expensive, but it changes everything. You’ll enjoy the process more, learn faster, and create pieces you’re truly proud of. That joy and satisfaction are what help your craft evolve from a hobby into a way of life.
If you're ready to start wrapping, I recommend:
Cabochons sized around 4cm x 3cm or 3cm x 2cm – easy to handle and ideal for learning. Find Single Cabochons listed in my shop HERE.
Crystal Cabochon lots if you’re committed and want to explore a wide variety at a better price.
You can find both in my shop if you're ready to begin your journey or expand your collection.
Your First Knot: A Sacred Beginning in Micromacramé Jewelry
My story, the thread I trust, and how to start your own crystal-infused creations.
Starting Your Macramé Journey: My Thread of Choice & Crystal Connection
When you're just starting out with macramé—especially micromacramé jewelry—the best cord to begin with is the 1mm thread. My go-to choice is Linhasita, a strong, waxed polyester cord that holds knots beautifully and lasts for years.
I’ve been using 1mm thread since 2015, when I first learned knotting techniques from street artisans across Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Brazil. These cultures hold deep, ancestral knowledge of handcraft, and learning directly from these artisans was a profound and humbling initiation. For many years, I exclusively used the 1mm cord before eventually progressing to finer 0.5mm thread for more intricate work.
Before discovering Linhasita, I worked with a waxed linen thread from Thailand. My first creations were humble but full of intention—simple basket wraps for raw crystals, which I taught myself how to make after buying a quartz necklace from a small market in Coolum Beach. I was en route to my Essence of Angels™ Teacher Training, and that crystal piece sparked something deep in me.
From 2013 to 2015, while living on the Sunshine Coast, I created thousands of raw crystal necklaces using this basic basket technique. I added slipknot straps, beaded accents, tassels, and sometimes even multiple crystal baskets in one piece. This became the foundation of my offerings—I sold these necklaces and taught others how to make them, all while facilitating chakra meditations, spiritual wellbeing workshops, and practicing as a Crystal Healer.
Crystals have always spoken to me. Since childhood, I’ve had an innate ability to “hear” and feel their energy. That soul connection inspired me to create crystal amulet necklaces—not just as jewelry, but as living tools for spiritual connection. I see each piece as a bridge between the crystal’s voice and its new keeper.
